Reesink irrigation helps Royal St George’s through drought

The background

Royal St Georges Golf Club in Kent became a Toro Total Solutions customer with an irrigation system upgrade in 2018. The main reason for the upgrade was for the precision it would offer in the face of changing weather patterns.

The brief

To get to the next level with its irrigation meant getting a system on board that utilised innovative technology. Being able to control water in millimetres was cited as a primary objective and the Toro Lynx Central Control System and over a thousand sprinklers were installed across the greens, tees and fairways.

The results

The club, which consistently ranks among the top courses in the world and has hosted The Open, had its faith in the decision pay off, as Toro irrigation has helped the course navigate a series of droughts since installation.

The flexibility of the sprinklers and precision of Lynx control has meant that Royal St George’s has been able to target its irrigation to the surfaces that needed it most and conserve water through a series of very dry and hot summers.

Since the new irrigation installation, the greens have been expanded and the turf on the fairways which had suffered from drought has grown back.

The conclusion

The Toro irrigation system helped significantly in the run up to, during and recovery from The Open 2021. The team set moisture levels they wanted to achieve throughout, and with Toro could see how close they were to those levels and apply the correct amount of irrigation in the right places to achieve that.
