The background

As part of its drive to continuously improve the course, Royal Cinque Ports secured its position as a Toro Total Solutions customer by replacing its 20-year-old irrigation system with a state-of-the-art Toro one and investing in yet another Toro machinery fleet agreement.

The brief

The course itself had changed over the past twenty years and as a result, lots of areas such as the walkways weren’t benefitting from the irrigation. Faults with the electrics meant it was time for a change with course and estates manager, James Bledge, deciding they needed a system that could provide more uniform coverage, target areas more efficiently and allow staff to change the trajectory and ease of set up of the sprinkler heads to deal with the strong winds of a links course.

The answer was the installation of a Toro Lynx Central Control System and Infinity sprinklers on the greens, surrounds, approaches and fairways with B Series sprinklers on the tees and T5 and PRN combinations on the walkways.

The results

With the installation completed by one of the leading golf construction companies MJ Abbott, both the installation process and the support from Reesink Turfcare impressed James. Whether the club needed parts, back up or training, Reesink has always been available to help.

Its new Toro irrigation system got the club through one of the driest summers in history to date while achieving incredible water savings. James and the team kept within the club’s water allowance and didn’t lose any turf coverage. 

With a control system that is much more modern, it’s able to make adjustments from a mobile phone and provide the same accuracy as hand watering.

The conclusion

Royal Cinques Port reached the top100golfcourses.com world rankings for the first time, which can in part be attributed to the remarkable improvement the course has seen thanks to Toro irrigation.

With a Total Solutions package, the club is continuously improving and well on its way to making the course a ‘bucket list’ destination.
