The background

Mike Greenwood, with over 42 years of experience as head greenkeeper at Ormskirk Golf Club in Lancashire, oversaw the installation of a second irrigation system, three decades after the first. 

The decision of who to go with was made in consultation with the club’s management committee and local installer LS Systems.

The brief

The reasons for needing a new irrigation system remained consistent, the criteria being: uniform coverage, adequate water pressure, and cost-effectiveness. 

LS Systems guided the club through the selection process, introducing them to Toro’s range of options, which proved suitable for their requirements.

The results

Opting for a Toro GDC 2-wire system with Infinity sprinklers, the system covers 21 greens and all the tees. Mike praises the system’s ease of use and the durability of the sprinkler heads, emphasising their enhanced protection against damage. 

The system has already demonstrated improved coverage, water pressure, and optimisation of water usage, aligning with the club’s objectives. Overall, the investment has been met with satisfaction by the club.

The conclusion

With the new irrigation system in place, the club went on to host the Lancashire PGA Championship and the Lancashire Amateur Championship in the same year which was testament to the course’s quality.
