The background
Leighton Buzzard Golf Club set about upgrading its 30-year-old irrigation system with Toro and UK distributor Reesink Turfcare in phased instalments to limit disruption to the course and spread the outlay.
The brief
For the first phase, the club needed a new control system that was efficient, easy to operate, had remote access and would deliver water savings. After a summer of heavy downpours, being able to adjust water put-down from home was a must.
Also involved in the first phase was a sprinkler upgrade for the greens which needed to provide consistency and reliability in the club’s water output. A big factor was whatever worked here needed to also suit the tees which would follow as part of the second stage.
The results
The new Lynx system has made life much easier in terms of operation and control, ticking off all the boxes on the club’s wish-list which was extensive.
The club replaced 86 of its old impact sprinklers on its greens with gear-driven T7 heads, which has given a consistent watering pattern and reliability in water output. The system allowed for even greater efficiency in terms of water resources and cost savings, proved by the club’s mains water bill.
The conclusion
The first phase of the renovation was completed without disruption. There’s been significant cost savings, with these seen almost immediately. But the main difference was how much easier the new system made life for those using it in terms of operation and control.
Replacing an irrigation system is a big project and spreading out installation can make the difference between starting it sooner or leaving it much later.
