The background

Ham Manor Golf Club, situated in West Sussex, faced the challenge of maintaining its course amidst its unique microclimate, characterised by abundant grass growth and wet winter months. Complementing a machinery lease deal, Ham Manor completed phase one of its irrigation installation, marking the beginning of a three-phase process to renew the entire system.

The brief

With the decision to replace its irrigation system being the biggest single investment the club would make in the next 30-40 year due diligence was essential in the evaluation process. Under the leadership of course manager Paul Brown, Toro was chosen for the project. It had everything the club needed, including first class support from Reesink’s Rob Jackson which proved to be an essential component of the whole process.

The results

Part of a three-phase process to renew the entire system, the club installed back to back Toro Infinity sprinklers on the club’s new academy area and brand new 18th hole, with the plan to introduce the Toro Lynx central control system and then Infinity sprinklers, back-to-back on the greens, tees, aprons and partial fairways of the 18-hole course next.

The conclusion

Ham Manor Golf Club’s dedication to optimising irrigation systems underscores its commitment to sustainable course management practices. It’s common sense that when making an irrigation decision to consider sustainability too. With that in mind the club built a new irrigation lake and a borehole installed. Paul is also actively investigating running grey (roof) water into the lake to further enhance the club’s ability to be less dependent on a mains water supply.
