Frilford Heath
The equipment
Otterbine Air Flo 3 aerator
The background
Frilford Heath, a 54-hole championship golf course complex near Oxford, had a 6m, 10-million-gallon reservoir and it needed to make the water good enough quality to irrigate the course.
The brief
The water in the reservoir came from a brook downstream through farming fields, full of pollutants and run-off nitrates. There was silt and sediment at the bottom of the reservoir that hadn’t seen the light of day for ten years, and an inordinate amount of organic mixture creating an abundant amount of algal growth.
An Otterbine Air Flo 3 was installed to deal with the long-term and challenging project.
The results
The water is crystal clear again and being used all over the course. The only thing the club uses mains water for now is washing machinery and for the toilet facilities saving £25,000 a year.
The conclusion
For Sid, the Otterbine diffuser has done exactly what he intended it to do – it has made 10-million-gallons of water ready to use and given the club a degree of self-sufficiency it had never experienced before.
We knew the diffuser had its work cut out, but now there is more oxygen in that reservoir than ever before. If we did incur another algal bloom, the water is in the best possible position to counteract it.
