The background
As one of the top golf courses in the world by the Top 100 Golf Courses and with the course recognised for its unique topography and layout, it’s important that the course maintenance of Cruden Bay Golf Club’s traditional Scottish links course is always the best it can be. As a result, a complete irrigation installation was actioned to further improve the playing surfaces.
The brief
It was important for the club to have a clearer plan for its irrigation so the team could be more efficient with its time and labour resources. But it was equally important to manage the cost of the project, spreading it out into phases and minimising the amount of time work was potentially disturbing members.
It was important to the club that it make informed decisions about the irrigation system it wanted at each stage of the project. This was mainly led by on-site, in situ demonstrations of Toro sprinklers used alongside competitor brands.
The results
Throughout extensive trials, it was clearly evident to Course Manager Alister Matherson that Toro performed better – the quality of performance of the sprinkler heads and the quality of service from Reesink Turfcare stood out.
Despite the large installation and renovation, the process went smoothly with the work of OCMIS irrigation specialists and RH Associates consultancy.
With a new transfer pump and holding tank, the addition of new pipework, cabling and Toro irrigation valves, and brand new Toro sprinklers across the greens, approaches and walkways, controlled by Toro’s Lynx central control, the result is a dramatic improvement in the quality and coverage of water application which in turn has made a big difference to the presentation and playability of the course.

The conclusion
The club is now benefitting from a completely modern, functional irrigation system delivering the cost and time effective irrigation solution Toro is known for. The club highlighted the overall ease of use and reliability of the system, and highlighted features such as the weather station and mobile app for bringing the ultimate control and significant operational savings.
