Seeing is believing at Brickendon Grange Golf Club

Otterbine Fractional five-in-one aerating system

The background

The club has the problem of slightly stagnating water in two of the ponds flanking the eighth and eighteenth holes to solve, and with the occasion of the club’s 50th anniversary to mark, it was time to tackle the problem.

The water needed some TLC as it was starting to smell. Lewis Matthole, deputy greenkeeper,  knew the answer was an aerator, he just had to demonstrate the positive effect this would bring to the management committee.

The brief

As with most things in life it can be a hard sell to get people to buy into something they can’t see, so Lewis created a makeshift unit with a hose and end plug to demonstrate the effect of a fountain.

The result was the management committee could instantly see how a fountain would rejuvenate the two holes and the decision was made to bring in Otterbine’s Fractional five-in-one aerating system.

The results

The water quality vastly improved and the problem of stagnating and smelling water was solved, and by bringing beauty and tranquillity to the ponds the club essentially created two new beauty spots for golfers to enjoy.

The conclusion

Coming from having to demonstrate the benefits a fountain would bring with a makeshift aerator, the club ended up with one member of the club being so impressed with the results and taken with the idea that the project came about to mark the occasion of the club’s 50th anniversary in 2016, they offered to step in and pay for both fountains!

Gone is the problem of stagnating and smelling water, which was perfect timing for the club’s 50th anniversary!
